BLUESTEM
Commissioned by the University of Iowa
Sculpture location: New Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, University of Iowa, Iowa City.
-
The wood sculpture will be suspended inside the main entry atrium of the building. It will be 27 feet high by 7 feet wide by 8 feet deep.
The sculpture is inspired by the anatomy of a single stem of Big Bluestem prairie grass (Andropogon gerardii) that is native to the site of the hospital and once grew widely in the region. The intricate structure of the sculpture is informed by the porosity and growth of cancellous bone.
