The sculpture is inspired by the structure within the stem of the sagebrush Artemisia tridentate, a plant that grows widely within Central Oregon and Deschutes County. The sculpture will echo a horizontal cross section of structural growth rings that support the plant and intricate cell networks that draw water and nutrients to the plant from deep in the soil. When viewed from above, waves of graphite on the sculpture’s surface reference aerial views of obsidian flows from the Newberry caldera, just south of Redmond. A striking resemblance between this large-scale lava flow and a microscopic view inside a humble sagebrush will coalesce within the sculpture.
