Cantilevering 80 feet above the main entry to Meta’s new Building X in Redmond, WA, Torrent is inspired by the shape, movement and sound of a waterfall. Made from Alaskan yellow cedar salvaged from the Tongas National Forest, upper members are 10" x 5" thick and lower members are as delicate as 1" x 1". A reflective graphite finish covers the lower portions of the sculpture.
Where the top of the sculpture engages the wall, its greater mass and solidity reference frozen water. As the form travels downward, the elements decrease in mass and undulate more freely, representing unified moving water that divides into striations. The lowest sections of the sculpture twist with a tonal range of graphite that is both reflective and subtly traced with rectilinear highlights and shadows.
Project structural engineer: Gary Gill. Building X architecture: Frank Gehry Partnership. Curator: Tamar Benzilkry. Structural wall brackets: Chris McMullen. Grade Studio project fabrication leads: Alyssa Sheeres and Ian Gill. CAD design: Henry Cowdery. CNC Lead: Matthew Soma.
