COALITION
Open to the public: 715 P Street, Sacramento, CA 95814
2021
-
Referencing the base of a giant sequoia burned out from within after a wildfire, the sculpture is suspended above the entry to the new headquarters for the California Natural Resources Agency in Sacramento, CA. Standing below Coalition, visitors can find vantages up into a hollow interior both perforated and burned. The dark burned surfaces contrast with bright natural light filtering through the sculpture’s folded forms. The complexities of the sculpture's exterior form are best seen at night when artificial light from above highlights subtle undulations.
Carved from laminated lengths of standing dead Alaskan Yellow Cedar salvaged from the Tongas national forest in Alaska. The sculpture is 26 feet high and 14 feet wide.
